Used Cars For Sale By Private Owner

Q.Can somebody tell me if a person should pay the sale tax buying a used car from somebody else? I heard that dealerships do charge that tax although I don't understand why at places like Goodwill you don't pay the sale tax buying second-hand clothes and at dealerships you pay it.

A.The tax on used cars is the same as on new cars in most states. You pay it when you register the car. In the two states where I bought a used car there were rules regulating the minimum tax due if you couldn't provide receipt. If you bought a car that was more than 7 model years old, you didn't have to provide receipt and you could just tell them what you paid. So that if you are buying an older car, you can give them a much lower price than what you actually paid and save on tax.
